Living Life on Your Own Terms: Embracing Authenticity and Personal Growth

Traci Lynn • July 9, 2023

Who are you living your life for ? You or Society?

We are taught from a young age the need to conform to societal norms and expectations - to go to college, find a stable job, get married, and have children. Society outlines specific agendas that push us into boxes of what is acceptable and what isn't, and it is difficult and near impossible to break free from the expectations that have been ingrained in us since childhood. But what if........... what if we lived our lives on our own terms instead of conforming to the expectations of others? What if we embraced our own values and beliefs, and pursued our own passions and interests?  What would happen if you began to stop conforming? Let's explore some of the potential benefits of living life on your own terms, some strategies to overcome fear and self-doubt, the rewards of being authentic, and the importance of personal growth.

It is important to acknowledge how much societal and cultural factors shape our beliefs and values. We are influenced by our families, our peers, the media, the educational system, the list is endless. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we must adhere to these expectations to be successful and validated by society. However, it's important to remember that no one knows better than YOU what will bring YOU happiness and fulfillment in life.

While conforming to societal expectations may provide a sense of security and validation, it also can also be limiting and unfulfilling. Living your life on your own terms can be scary, because what does that even mean or look like? Each person's definition of a fulfilling life is shaped differently. Defining your own terms allows you to break free from the preconceived notions of what you "should" be doing and to pursue new opportunities that align with your personal passions and interests. When we start to limit ourselves to doing only what society deems acceptable, we miss out greatly on the personal growth, joy, and fulfillment that can arise from taking risks and the pursuit of discovering our authentic selves.

To live life on your own terms, it's important to overcome fear and self-doubt. This can be achieved through self-reflection, goal-setting, and seeking out healthy, supportive relationships. Self-reflection allows us to better understand our own values, interests, and passions. Goal-setting helps us envision and actively work towards our desired future. Seeking out healthy supportive relationships helps us to build a network of security to fall back on in those times of self-doubt, they also help us build confidence and support us in overcoming fears.

Living life unconventionally comes with its own set of challenges, but also provides an abundance of opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery. Living authentically requires us to be true to ourselves, even in the face of opposition or criticism. It is standing firm in who you are and who you want to become in the face of those who wish to keep you quieted. This can be daunting and down right exhausting, but will ultimately lead to a sense of confidence and self-acceptance that cannot be achieved by living a life that doesn't align with our own values and beliefs.

Living life on your own terms requires bravery, self-reflection, and perseverance. By overcoming fear and self-doubt, we can pursue our passions and interests without the shackles of societal expectations. The journey towards authenticity may be challenging, but ultimately leads to inner peace and fulfillment. Let's embrace our unique paths through life and live on our own terms - the rewards of authenticity and personal growth are truly incomparable.

Good Luck & choose to break free!
